Twitter: How Big Is YOUR List of Followers?

Twitter is all the rage - how can YOU take advantage of it?

Did you see the ABC Evening News the other night when Charles Gibson did a feature on Twitter?

Congressmen are using it. The President's Election Committee used it. Business people are using it. And when the President had his virtual Town Meeting recently, Twitter.com slowed down because there was so much traffic about what President Obama was saying.

You do have your own account or several accounts, right? If not, go to Twitter.com right now and start one. It will take you fewer than 5 minutes to sign up.

Twitter let's you "eavesdrop" on millions of conversations around the world. And when you decide to follow people, you can tailor what conversations you listen to.

I have several accounts, so here are some examples about how I am using Twitter:

1. I have an account at Twitter/UltimateWAHDads Be sure to follow me there. And when I post information, it's about marketing, dads working at home, tips and tricks for attracting more people to you. (See Below: Build A HUGE Twitter List)

2. I'm also on Twitter as PhotoCharlie. I have an extensive background in photography and I share my ideas with those following me. I also have several photography-related products that people want to learn about, so I share information about them too.

I have 10 Twitter accounts based around various keywords so that when I "tweet," I am consistent with the information I deliver.

Build A HUGE Twitter List

How can you build a list quickly, especially when you're starting out?

Usually it takes months and months to attract lots of people to you as followers. Unless you are a household name like a rock singer, movie star, or national politician it could take you 3 - 6 months to build a 10,000 follower list.

Why, as a business person, do you care? Why do you want a large list?

Think of Twitter as lots of short conversations that you get to listen in on. When you hear some people speaking about (let's say) "work at home marketing" and you have information that could help them, wouldn't it be nice to be able to contact them when your information was ready?

So often marketers are forced to send information to people who have NO interest in what is offered, and by doing it that way, he/she wastes the message and wastes the money it took to get that message out.

You DO know that paid advertising is precisely that model, right? You place a newspaper ad, radio or TV spot, or send out direct mail to a list you purchased:

MOST of those who are contacted have NO interest at all in what you offer.

But when you can listen-in on conversations and KNOW that certain people are interested in "work at home marketing," you stand a much better chance that what you are offering can assist them.

What's the old parable about spreading your seed on rock or spreading your seed on fertile ground? Clearly the seed on rock stands no chance to grow. But when you seed the fertile ground, you can later harvest much success.

This is true with marketing too. And Twitter gives you a chance to know who is interested in what you offer.

So, how can YOU build a Huge List?

Starting A Business - Invest In Lunch

Why Lunch Is The Most Important Meal For Work At Home Business Owners

If you're starting a business, have a business, or are turbo charging your work at home business, invest in lunch as one of your most prized possessions.

Make it YOUR time for masterminding. YOUR time to invest in yourself, your education, your business's growth.

Find someone who has skills you would like to sharpen and invite him/her for lunch. It doesn't matter if she or he is in the same industry (or has the same focus) as you, all businesses are the same, as Dan Kennedy would say. ("But Charlie... MY business is different." OK, stop that: Learn from others and you'll see how similar ALL businesses are!)

Most entrepreneurs love talking about themselves and what they do, so ask lots of questions that lead to the lessons you are looking for.

Once there in the relaxed atmosphere of breaking bread, find out how this person succeeded AND what mistakes were made. People are often candid in such an atmosphere and you can learn from the success and the conflicts.

Ask about your business plan and get some suggestions - hey, you set up the lunch, most likely are paying for it, so focusing SOME of the attention on you will be understood (and dare I say expected).

The wheel has already been invented and YOU don't have to invent a better one - ask for advice and then listen carefully - could be the best investment for your work at home business you've made in a long time!

Entrepreneur Magazine Charts Language Differences: Gen Y, Gen X, Baby Boomers

The Generations Communicate Differently - So Learn How To Get Your Message Across

Did you see Entrepreneur Magazine's March edition? See page 55 and you'll see a chart of how our three of our generations communicate: Gen Y, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.

The chart is to show how modern the Gen Y kids are, but I see it differently. As marketers, we should learn how these generations communicate so that when we speak to them, we can use the method they prefer.

So rather than "judge" how they are communicating, use this information to help you connect with them.

How they most like to communicate:

A. Gen Y - Texting, Cell phones, and IM
B. Gen X - Email, IM, and cell phones
C. Baby Boomers - Email, cell phones, and face to face

Clearly Gen Y doesn't want to stop when communicating. Gen X stays mobile but will email too. And baby boomers are more tied to the personal touch by typing from a computer, meeting in person, or email.

Can you see how knowing that will affect how your message is received? Don't expect to organize a marketing campaign to text 60 year olds and don't think that your message will be responded too very quickly if you email teens.

There's more to this, and I'll write about it soon.

But as you Turbo Charge your Work At Home business, keep communication methods in the front of your planning.

President Obama is a Work At Home Dad

I didn't see it but a close friend pointed out to me that Gayle King said on Good Morning America that President Obama is a Work At Home Dad.

As those of us who work at home know, it's not the TYPE work that matters, it's that we have an office in our homes.

No commute. No dry cleaning bills for our suits. No expensive lunches out even when we're just eating alone.

But if things are going well enough for you, if you need to communicate with others who understand where you're coming from, if you want to learn more about marketing, sales, systems to keep you on track and allow you to achieve your goals, perhaps this will help: http://TurboChargeMyWorkAtHome.com

Turbo Charge My Work At Home

Welcome to this new blog.

You're working at home, so glad to be away from the corporate BS: no unnecessary meetings, no long commutes and expenses to keep suits and ties pressed, no working for "the Man" - it's all for you and your family.

But things could be going better. Even with all the freedom you love, you wish you were earning more money.

Sometimes keeping to your schedule is tough. Or your marketing plan (you do HAVE one, right?). Or you think back over the day and can only remember those three phone calls that interrupted you from getting some serious work done.

And how do you market effectively? Or set up websites? And what is all the fuss about Twitter, WordPress, and Google Friend Connect?

Is it time to reach out, Dad to Dad, to get some help with all of this before you drown? Time to share your thoughts and receive suggestions and systems, tips, and methods from others so you aren't constantly reinventing the wheel?

Maybe this can help: Turbo Charge My Work At Home And Follow Us On Twitter To Learn More!
