Entrepreneur Magazine Charts Language Differences: Gen Y, Gen X, Baby Boomers

The Generations Communicate Differently - So Learn How To Get Your Message Across

Did you see Entrepreneur Magazine's March edition? See page 55 and you'll see a chart of how our three of our generations communicate: Gen Y, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.

The chart is to show how modern the Gen Y kids are, but I see it differently. As marketers, we should learn how these generations communicate so that when we speak to them, we can use the method they prefer.

So rather than "judge" how they are communicating, use this information to help you connect with them.

How they most like to communicate:

A. Gen Y - Texting, Cell phones, and IM
B. Gen X - Email, IM, and cell phones
C. Baby Boomers - Email, cell phones, and face to face

Clearly Gen Y doesn't want to stop when communicating. Gen X stays mobile but will email too. And baby boomers are more tied to the personal touch by typing from a computer, meeting in person, or email.

Can you see how knowing that will affect how your message is received? Don't expect to organize a marketing campaign to text 60 year olds and don't think that your message will be responded too very quickly if you email teens.

There's more to this, and I'll write about it soon.

But as you Turbo Charge your Work At Home business, keep communication methods in the front of your planning.
